LABOUR FIGHTS IN CANTON.

LIFE HELD IN SMALL ESTEEM.

CRUELTY AND, INCREDIBLE SUFFERING.

THE QUEEN'S BAND AND DRUMS ON SHAMEEN.

[FROM A SHAMEEN CORRESPONDLYT.]

SHME, October 8th, Your Chinese correspondent refers casually to labour fights, in the streets of Canton and treats them as though they were mere matters of routine in the every-day life in the City. They may be, but never- theless they appear in a different light to the foreigner. The state- ment that fighting took place, but was not regarded very seriously nad resulted in less than forty casualties, may cover a story of in- sredible suffering and ill-usage.

Then between 400 and Sto coolies, with big bamboo poles, iran-bars, choppers and other wea- Rons were seen on Shaki preparing for a fight. They chased one an other and belaboured one another without mercy. A posse of Chinese police, armed with revolvers, come the scene and chased the
