**AIRMAN " CAPS,
Does Madame la Mode intend that we shall all take to the air this winter or are "airman" caps just another of her whima! Certain it is that they are proving very populi and ook extremely chic. How far we have gone from the day's wh the sanie type of bat was worn for three years by those who considered themselves the leaders of fashion. To-day every month and almost every important piece of newa is the inspiration for a new mode; many of these are destined to pass as quickly as they came, to fail to catch on, but others in the chic little airman hat
come to stay,
it is not very one who can wear the new haa. That in itself is a recommendation for the day at rigid standarisation is passing, But for the bright young things and older women with small well shaped faces, these airman helmets look charming.

At The Valley.
On Saturday last the Civil Ser- vice, with a weak side out, lost to the Queen's Regt. after an exciting game by two runs. The soldiers batted rat and did pretty well up to a point but Evans, on going in a second time, found his old form. Hawkins took a very fine, one-hand- ed eatch in the deep field, und Holdman, in spite of having to keep to seven different bowlers, man- aged to give away no extras at all, besides stumping a man very smart- ly of Evans. The Civil Service started badly, Sutherland being rug out without getting a ball, but even, so at one time they looked like pulling it off. Wood, who hit A nice six, Harper and Hawkins all batted well. But then came a crop of failures. When Reed went in last 15. runs were needed. He dumped four very firmly and Hawkins hit a couple more and a single eventuated. But in a gallant attempt to settle things with an- other four Reed was bowled middle stump. And so the match was lost- but it was an excellent game. By the way, I hear with much regret that F. Ling of the C.8.C.C, may have to undergo an operation for appendicitia. I sincerely trust, it is not so. Besides being uncommonly trying for him it would be a perfect. tragedy for the Civil Service bowl- ing Reed only bowled a few overs by way of a trial and I am glad to hear he was none the worse for it.

Morris contributed 81 and W, Brace 47. Mid. Johnson, who was tried late, put a stop to Kowloon's merry inuings by taking five wickets in. ave overs, giving away 24 runs only. Johnson subsequently made 42 for the visitors, who were dismissed for a total of 148 runs.
