HOW ABOUT CHRIST- MAS?

AT THE SIGN OF THE LANTERN.

It seems hard to believe that it is October with the Streets still with flowerlike muslins and ghiffons, but it is high time that we were considering the subject of Christmas gifts for those at Home.

When one has lived here for some years the peculiar gifts of the Enst Jose some of their fascination, but if you can remember the thrills of the voyage and your first week among the Hong Kong shaps, yon will realise what the native pro- duce means to those at Home. For so little you can give so much plea sure: 4 dollar spent here will give a pound's worth of pride and joy to the one who opens your parcel. For what they want At Home is something distinctively foreign" which will be a proof that friends from far away hare not forgetten cbeta.

The Sign of the Lantern, within whose doors you find so much that is rare and beautiful, is always a happy hunting ground for gifts large or small. Miss Honess has a particular genius for offering us the gifts of the East in practical and acceptable form. Nestlaces suitable only for collections or a curios are restrung for present day us, scraps of lovely old embroidery) are used to fashion or embellish a hundred and one useful articles.

Those delightful sex grass bags which we use so much here are very little known at Home and they have the advantage of being very easily packed for transport. A large con- signment of thern has just arrived, some of the latest being in plain colours with an initial in one and containing a

small purse of the same colour. Of the same material are spectacle cases, shopping bags, blotters and book- covers, all well made and in a variety of charming patterns and colours.

Sot grass combined with stronger material ia used to make very decorative attaché cases which would be admirable for bathing, and nests of work baskets. Manila cloth bag, collapsible book resta and waste paper baskets would also make much appreciated gifts. There baskets and book slides are also mande in old Chinese embroidery and silk, and as they fold quite flat for packing, they are very suitable to send home.

The charming little rice paper figures of which I have told you before, seem to be at arver ending variety. Each shipment brings fresh and delightful Sgures; among!
