It is probable that the compul- sory employment of Indias Guards on local ships will shortly be abolished, and shipping companies interested have been officially, noti ficd.
The replies from European arma with ships on the China coast were practically for giving up the guards. but firms running ships up the rivers were equally unanimous in favour of remaining them.
The majority Chinese arms with chips workingcoast and river runs, are in favour of keeping the Guards, and some firms have even expressed the wish to carry Guards on the ships as far as Singapore, which would be an innovation
