The illiterate class of Chinese are very amusing and give expression, like the Irish, to a great deal of unconscious humour.
A good instance was heard at the Central Magistrate yesterday when a hawker was charged with caus ing an obstruction by placing two baskete in the footpath at Wan- chaí.
He told the Magistrate (Mr. R. E. Lindsell) that he was lame and wag-unable to walk far with the heavy baskets. He had just placed them on the footpath to take a short rest. He also stated that he was poor and had no relatives to help him, and that he himself was the only bread-winner for an aged mother of over 60 years.
Mr. Lindsell felt sorry for the man and discharged him.
