been since the early days of his Wed, 21 service closely connected with the development of modern gunnery in the navy, and of torpedoes and aircraft. He was in charge of Beronautical development of the Navy from 1913 to 1916, and in 1917 wea in command of the U.S.S. North Carolina, which convoyed troops to Europe.

His other service has included membersh' on the International Armistice Commission in Belgium in 1918 and the command of the the U.S. Naval Detachment in Eastern Mediterranean. He was appointed U.S. High Commissioner to Turkey in August 1919, and a few months later was appointed a member of the. International Com-1 mission of Inquiry into the Greek Occupation of Smyrna. He was one of the American delegates to the Lausanne Conference from November, 1922, to February, 1993. After the Lausanne Treaty was ratified and Joseph Grew appoint ed as Ambassador to Turkey, Ad- miral Bristol was withdrawn to Washington and given the highest rank of the U.S. Navy in recognis tion of his services. After a short stay in Washington he spent a brief Holiday in Europe before starting for his post here, the command hi which he assumes to-day.
