WILL IT BE OF COMMERCIAL ADVANTAGE?
OPINIONS OF BUSINESS-MEN SHARPLY DIVIDED.
The opinions of Hong Kong's business men are sharply divided regarding the utility and commercial prospects of a vehicular ferry across the harbour-the subject discussed in a leading article in the Daily Pre yesterday. Mr. C. Lauritsen, the Managing- Director of the Dragon Motor Car Company, advocates the estab- fishment of such a ferry but does not, regard it as a commercial proposition. He looks upon it as a needed public improvement which should be undertaken by the Government. He did not think that lorry owners would seriously consider, using the ferry for transport service but would prefer to maintain lorries on either side of the harbour. This latter opinion was, to supported by Mr. F. H. Crapnell, the Manager of the Kowloon Wharl and Godown Company, who believes that transport by junka. On the other hand, Mr. R. Melville will always hold its own. Smith, of Mesars. Dedwell & Co., considered that the transport of goods in lorries by means of a vehicular ferry would prove "most economical and that firms would be saved considerable sums of money. Mr. R. L. Bridger, Managing-Director of Messrs. Lang, Crawford & Co., agreed. With the money we should save lighterage," he remarked, "we could buy many more lorries."

Of course, every one admits that a vehicular ferry, working say, until mid-night every day of the week would be a great 'con- venience to the motorist who wished to go for a drive in the New Territories. That is taken for granted, but our enquiries were not directed particularly to that aspect of the subject. We wished to find out whether firms would find the ferry commercially advantageous and whether they would use it sufficiently to provide n revenue which would pay working expenses and give, within the copine of a few years, a reasonable return on capital expenditure.
In view of the conflicting-apinions among business-men them- selves it appears to us highly important that further careful in- vestigations should be male-and-detailed estimates drawn up in the light of the information provided. One gentleman whom we interviewed expressed the opinion that fifty or sixty private cars would be taken across the harbour every summer evening. That is probably an outside estimate but even so the revenue of a car would nut go far towards maintaining a ferry when the piers alone are expected to cost $2,000,000.
