HONG KONG'S TRADE.
THE ATTITUDE OF THE CHINESE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
'SOUND VIEWS AS TO THE REALITIES OF THE PRESENT POSITION."
AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT.
We have indisputable evidence that the articles upon Hong Kong's trade published in the Daily Press on July 29th and August 1st have been very favourably received by a number of Chi- nese merchants. The bead of a well-known firm, which has been trading in the Colony for several generations, visited as yesterday to express his complete agreement with the line taken by this paper." He remarked "You have said. just what I wanted to say and I can assure you that many Chinese business men are very pleased indeed." This gentleman, it may be mentioned, was a member of the Chinese, Chamber of Commerce. He also handed us a cut- ting from a vernacular paper announcing that the Chinese Chamber had decided to ask their legal advisers to write to an upon the subject. We replied that we should be pleased to publish any statement they cared to make. The letter-signed by the Cham- ber's Secretary-bas now come to hand and we give it below.
The letter is published and requires little comment. We would, however, ask the Committee to remember that they are business menj and, in their own words, should not be unduly sensitive" of the language employed-in giving comments and criticisms on public activities
For months past there have been suggestion, direct and in- direct, that trade in Hong Kong would be improved if only more ·
We know that there is money were available on easier terms sufficient money in the Colony to finance any sound trading enter. prise and the banks, it is generally agreed, have adopted a broad- minded and sound policy in putting that money into circulation. The article which appeared in the Daily Preu on July 29th might have been written, ip ita essentials, a month previously. It con- cerned commercial and Anancial policy. The fact that it was associated with the correspondence which had passed between the Chinese and European Chambers of Commerce simply gave paint We do not know who the members of the to the argamenta. Chinese Committee are and to say that our remarks are "a grave reflection in the band Ades" of the members. of that Committee, We know that the appears to us, in the circumstances, absurd. Chinese Committee have had several meetings to discuss the trade situation." If as a result of their deliberations they could put forward some practical proposals which they would like to consider in conjunction with the members of the European Chamber we have no doubt their invitation to a conference would be accepted with alacity. We commended the European Chamber upon their refusal “ to be led into what we considered would be aimless talking.
We very greatly regret that the members of the Chinese Com mittee should have consider our remarks upon business policy as a reflection upon themselves. They were gertainly never intended to be read in that way. Perhaps the apology will enable us to be good friends again. One well-known compradore, who we be lieve is a member of the Committee, was so incensed with us that he wrote stopping his subscription to the paper. This is mentality which, frankly, we do not understand, but we are afraid it is typical of some Hong Kong business circles. Perhaps a little ro flection, and conversation with his friends, will convince the irate one that he acted a little hastily. We bear no malice and shall be glad of the renowal of the patronage.
The letter from the Chamber of Commerce is as follows:-
