NORTHERNERS ENGAGED IN DEFENCE OF SOUTHERN CHIHLI.

The local vernacular Press publish reports, emanating from the Nanking Government, on the state of affairs at the Shantung war zone. Evidently, and very naturally, the Nanking Kuomintang are solicitous regarding the proud part played by the Southern soldiers, particularly at Hauchow, which was last mentioned (by Reuter) as being in the hands of the Northerners. The Nanking version of what happened at suchow is quite good but not very convincing, and not a little amusing is the reference made to the Southerners "ambush 80 miles south of Hauchow.""

Borodin, in his leisurely trek homewards, found time to pay a visit to Marshal Feng at Kaifengfu, "at which Honan city the ubiquitous Marshal now appears to be temporarily settled. It i regrettable that the vernacular Press is apparently unable to inform us what Borodin said to the ex-Christian Marshal or what the ex-Communist Feng said to him.
