TRIBUTE TO BRITAIN.
Interest throughout the Empire has been roused by the controversy in South Africa over the Flag and Nationality Bill which places the present flag with one from which the Union Jack has been banished.
The following statement by the Minister of the Interior, and the subsequent debate puts the situation more clearly than has heen possible in the brief Reuter cables.
"Republicanism is dend," declared Dr. Mulan, the Minister of the Interior, when he moved the second randing of the South African Flag and Nationality Bill. He referred to the status of the Union, which, he said, could not have been achieved without the support, of British statesman, for which the Dutch-speaking South Africans would always be grateful. Replying to repeated interrup- tions. Dr. Malan urged that Aus tralia, Canada and New Zealand all had their own national flags, and that it would be fatal to South Africa's acceptance of national status if she remained without a South African national flag.
He referred to what he called an "attitude of Colonial complex," and especially referred to the ag as a symbol of status. He said that the inan who looked on the Union Jack as a symbol of in- feriority and subjcetion was a most dangerous man.
Dr. Malan appealed to the House to keep the debate on the same high level na last year.
