Although there is very little news as to what is actually happening in Shantung-apart from the repeated statement that the Southern forces are forging their way gradually northward- it is once again reported in the vernacular newspapers that Tsinan, Shaatung's capital, 18, in a critical condition." So far as we are able to analyse the tactical and strategic situation, the Southerners are still quite a long way from being masters of Tsinan.
Meanwhile, the Southerners' Generalissimo, Chiang, appears to be much more interested in Hupch than in Shantung. He has just made important appointments towards providing leaders for the anti-Reds who are to rout the "Reds" in their Wu-han strongholds.
While the Diplomatie Corps generally appear to be observing a shinx-like attitude towards the Nationalist's order regarding the collection of the surtax at Shanghai, the Japanese Minister, very consistently, has protested and instructed the Japanese Consuler- Generul at Shanghai to lodge a protest with the Nationalist Government at Nanking.
Our loqul vernacular contemporary, Wah Tsz Yat Pao, says it e believed in certain Peking quarters that Mrs. Borodin and (presumably meaning the two Russian Reds" who ber couriers were arrealed at Pukow with her some months ago) will soon be released. If so, the move will be part of a general amnesty in Peking against those arrested as being incriminated in Communistic doctrines.
