VISCOUNT GORT REMAINS IN THE NORTH.

Chang Tso Lin having, on Saturday, formally accepted the exalted rank of Generalissimo of the Anti-Red Forces of China and having thus gone one better than Chiang Kai Shek, was, on Sunday, formally elected Dictator. The election, though it appears to have been entirely in the hands of his own military leaders, was conducted with due ceremony in the Forbidden City, and in the Yunion which had been specially reserved for the election of Presidents.

The new Dictator, by virtue of which olien Chang Tso Lin is now formally regarded as the head of China's Navy as well as its Army, at least so far as the North is concerned, claims (in his capacity of Generalissimo) "control of the inval and military forces and says that he is vested with the authority of the Republic."
