THE ARCOS RAID.
RUSSIAN FORTRESS IN

PUBLIC RELIEF AT GOVERN

[FROM QUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
LONDON, May 21st.
The outstanding event since my Just article was dispatched has been the Faid on "Auros" in London at the instance of the Home Secretary, who annetioned an application to a Magistrate for a search warrant. Ostensibly Arcos" is the Soviet Government's trading agency this country, the name being deriv- ed from the initials A.R.C.O.S. or the first letters of the full style and title of the concern, the All- Russian Co-operative Society."

1920 the Treasury made a this vast Hoviet organisation in grant of £10,000 towards the -the heart of Tondon was the head-general organising costs of the
quarters of an elaborate system of movement. espionage and intrigue against Britain.
Officially the reason for the raid was to discover an important State document which disappeared from the War Office. The authorities re- ceived information that it bad been taken to the Arcos" offices, and although it has not been discovered there other secrets have been laid bare which at the moment of writ ing raise in
an acute form the whole question of the Trade Agree- ment and of diplomatic relations with Russia. I had hoped to be in a position to discuss this anatter in detail, but information promised to the House of Commons has been postponed twice. The. Cabinet have had to decide the delicate problem whether it is possible to disclose the contents of the documents that have been found to Parlinabent and the country without at the same time indicating the consequential- effect on the policy of the Govern-- ment.**
