The Leader.
Ho
The leader is generally the boy. who first started things going. is more a boy of action thun a thinker. A boy who bas both strength of body and of will is always preferred to one who, bus not these qualities. A boy who would be chief" must also have a certain amount of personality. But the usual assets of the leader of a gang of Chinese boys are a very glib tongue and a very despotic character. The boys being, very timid and suspicious, the leader must do a lot of "talk" before be gets his crowd together; and in this the game of "bluff" plays a very important part. But once bo has a gathering his best means of keeping it intact is by terrorism.
The members of a gang are usually younger than the leader. His im mediate followers are his own per- annaf friends. His Houtenante do the work of inducing the others to jcin. Consequently, once they have enrolled, he treats the latter very patronisingly. His blows are more frequent than his smiles, and the mere distant he is, the more lie is feared and obeyed.
