*Ab! daughter of Dr. C. G. Wa and grand-daughter of the Inte Dr. Wu Ting Farig echoed another English member of the audience.

And so Helen stood out on the platform and read aloud, in fluent English, a carefully composed ad dress which expressed the gratitude of the past and present Chinese students of St. Stephen's Girls College to the Englishwoman who is going "home" la England to take —up-some-new-work in her own land

It may, be excusable to compliment Helen Wu. It is not an easy matier to stand out on a platform before an aurlience of several hundred people. It is still less easy to read an address, full of sentiment and ina a foreign language, without Besitation and without a single fault of emphasis or inflection. It must have needed great courage to co that when the audience contain |ed many English people who remem- bered hut Dr. C. C. Wu was in Canton two or three years since.

It is a long time ago that the then Dr. Ho Kai introduced Dr. Wu Ting Fang (Helen Wu's grandfather) to some of us who had heard of him

It is an old story of how Dr. Wu Ting Fang, the one time typical Chinese official, became a follower of Dr. Sun Yat Sen.

He did not talk politics to us in the local Chinese Club where Dr. Ho Kai entertained us. He seem ed to be obsessed with the idea that he had discovered the great secret of prolonging life. He ad- vocated vegetarian diet and espe- cially emphasised the great value

Sanitary Board Meeting, 4.15 p..

To-day. 12th Ordinary General Meeting Canton Insurance Office Ltd., Compulsory rifle practice has been | Jardine, Matheson's Board Room, introduced into all Soviet colleges noon. and universities. Both men and women urast paga a minimum stan dard of efficiency, in addition to a compulsory course of theoretical military training. The practien rifle or gun is described as "lighter than the actual fighting gun to be used in war," but it is considered the heat for training.

Shooting circles were firet started in the colleges in 1926 and most of the students are said to be expert shots. The best circle in Soviet Russin is in the Karl Marx College at Moscow, and its members have recently beaten active Red Army shots iù open-air competitions. Two men and one womai gained 'maxi- mum points.

Some are selected for military flying and some specialize moderntification and others in the use of dison. Once a week all students trad part in digging trenches and artillery practice.

A similar course of instruction on more elementary lines is given in schools, and boys and girls up to 13 years of age are being trained for auxiliary war work" with a view to their co-operation in the
