JAPAN'S MYSTERY WOMAN.

The great Japanese firm of Suzuki & Co. is controlled by Mme. Suzuki, the richest woman in the Orient, and probably the richest in the world.

Mme. Suzuki, because of her speculations in rice, is said also to he one of the most hated women in Japan.

Twenty years ago Mme. Suzuki Was an unknown widow.

LONDON, April 11th. The full dress debate in the House of Commons this week on China brought out no new facts, but all the same it served a very useful qurpose in several ways. It afforded end responsible Ministers an opportu- nity to reaffirm the essentials of British policy, and it disclosed how completely the Socialists are at variance in their opinions on China with the opinion of the people of this country.

As regards policy, recent events on your side, up to the time of

The British policy, as the people of this country under stand it and support it, is in effect to go as far as is possible to meet the national aspirations of the Chinese without comprising our legitimate rights and interests in China. In other words, while we are prepared to forego certain of our former privileges to meet changed conditions we are dead against vielding any demands to scattle out of China, or to submit to insult. or intimidation,

Socialists On The Wrong Tack The Socialists here, being more. or less faithful disciples of Moscow, pretend to ignore the fact of which they are perfectly cognisant, that we are in China to-day by virtue of definite treaty rights. To hear some of them holding forth in the House one might suppose that we had no business to be in China at all. If we agree to modify some of our treaty rights in deference to Chinese desires that is merely proof of our anxiety for conciliation and the maintenance of good relations.

She controls the steel industry of Japan, has the world monopoly in crude camphor and dominates the sugar market.

She owns 60 steamships and near ly as many more are under con- struction in her own shipyards.

Her enterprises include deals in zine, lead, copper, flour, cotton, leather, alcohol, celluloid, salt, artificial silk, rubber and rice, and she has minos, factorios, mills, dis- tilleries, breweries, dockyards, in- surance companies, and banks.

During the war, it has been estimated, she made anything from £10,000,000 to £40,000,000.

When Mine Suzuki sold the sugar refinery of her late. hualland for £000,000 and began to operate, the commercial world of Japan was scandalised, and there were riots among the working people.
