SHANGHAI, May 2nd. Mr B. Lenox Sirapson (the well- known author Putnain Weale"). who has been two manthe up-river writing Letters from the Yangtaz Valley, has returned to Shanghai from Hankow. A summary of his impressions was enbled at the time, but we give the following fuller ac count of Mr. Simpson's view of the Bituation.

Interviewed by Reuter, Mr Simpson said that the position on Wednesday, April 27th, was a8 follows:

The Peking-Hankow Railway had been completely closed to traffic for four days, the ostensible reason being troop movements, Repented reports declared, however, that the remnants of the army of General Chin Yun Ao, the former Wu Pei

Fu man who went over to the Nationalists, had been driven across the Hupeh border and that Esin yaachow, 140 miles north of Hun kow, had been captured by ad herents of Marshal Wu Pei Fu. Other forces of Marshal Wu were reported to be coming down the Han river and it was significant that trenches were being due on Hanyang Hill All available Nationalist forces had gone for ward to the Wushengkuan Pass, 100 milth north of Hankow, which (the Pass), it was generally expected, would be lost by the Nationalists. at any moment,

Anuther feature was that Council meetings opened with the reading of Sun Yat Sen's will, which denounces foreigners, The British members had decided that they would leave the building if this occurred again.

It seemed, said Mr. Simpson, a matter of urgent representation that Mr. Harold Porter, the newly- appointed Consul-General, should hasten at once to his post if he wished to see Any of the British residents still with lift in them. The British community in Hankow had been almost killed by lack of leadership. Careful investigation, he said, had proved that it would have been even eser to do on done on April 3rd.

Minister was working overtime to try and con- vince the remnants of the foreign communities that the restoration of foreign trade was the main object of the Communist Party, An up- ecasing Chinese exodus was going co in every direction. British ships were leaving loaded down to their marks with merchandise because every dealer was rushing to get every bit of produce away before the end came. The numbers of the foreign population left appeared to be 120 British, 60 Americans, 360 Japanese, 40 Fronch, 20 Scandina vians and 220 Germans, the large number of Gerisans being explain ed by their women and children, but a German steamer bad now ar rived and was leaving shortly with many refugees.

Killing The Prem, Hankow, Mr. Simpson went on, was still without newspapers, if the Cornmunist organ The People's Tribune were excepted, but The Hankow Herald was about to bring

out an abbreviated sheet. The treatment of The Central China Post at the hands of the Labour Union had been particularly odious, many of the printing room staff having been forced into the Army in an attempt so to destroy the organization so that the paper could never be revived. Mr. Archibald, the managing editor, was producing daily at the request of Rear Admiral Cameron, The

British Bulletin, a mimeographed sheet, on board one of the stationary vessels, but it was an urgent- British in- terest, said Mr. Simpson, to revive the newspaper.

Japanese Behaviour Splendid. Questioned on the subject of the Japanese Concession, Mr. Simpson said that the Japanese behaviour in Hankow had been splendid. Their concession was now a strong infantry redoubt defended by 500 rifles, and the disposition of their destroyers on the river close inshore was such that they could rake all approaches to the concession with a storm of fire.
