The largest number of complaints, however, deals with the terrible housing conditions, The following typical example was printed in the Pravda:-
We live in barracks, In one room-hitherto alloted to bache lors-two familias with new-born babies were compelled to seek shelter in the absence of all other accommodation. The beds are covered with rags. At night the inhabitants of this room cover themselves with whatever they can find, including sacking. The room serves the needs of many people, and is both bedroom, laundry, and bathroom combined.
Daylight penetraten through two windows which are half boarded owing to the absence of panes. In the evening a miser able oil lamp hardly lights the doorstep. The furniture of this room consists of a sail table and a few benches. The walls are thick with soot and are covered with squashed fleas. The floor is so thick with filth that it is impos sible to realise that there is wood underneath.
The other rooms are occupied by several families, each shiver ing with cold, for although the stoves are lit all the heat escapes through the numerous holes. The
