The expectations of onlookers of secing a Niagara-like rush of water through an enormous break were disappointed as at first only three smali fissures appeared through which the water trickled. Admiral Sir Charles Madden succeeds Admira! Earl Beatty, as First Sea Lord, on July 30th.

Admiral Beatty announced his intention to retire some time ago. His successor. Sir Charles Madden, Bart, has had a very distinguished naval career, and during the Inte war served at the Battle of Jutland, being mentioned in despatches. He has a number of decorations, which inclade the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun, 1st Class and 1st Cinsa Striped Tiger, of China. He was created a Barenet in 1019, and Admiral of the Fleet in 1924]
