Still less has anyone the right to speak of """treason to the Allied cause on the part of the Emperor Nicholas II. He sealed his loyalty ta his pledge by dying cars. a martyr's death.
The picture which he paints of i Rasputin is a revoluting one:
The mere fact of the close proximity to the Emperor's throne of a debauched and immoral pensaat, the fame of whose dis- gusting adventures had spread far and wide. was in itself suffi cient to undermine and uproot all the respect and reverence due to
the Crown.
The Czar WLA weak and the Crarina dent to all warnings. M. Hodzianko saw the Dowager Em- press and laid before her the dam- ning evidence against Rasputin which he had collected. She nid sadly to him:
I hear that you intend to speak
to the Emperor about Rasputin. Do not do so. Unfortunately he will not believe you, and it will cause him much pain. He is so pure of heart that he does not be- lieve in evil.

Hypnotic Power.
At a State service in honour of the dynasty he placed himself in front of the seats reserved for the the Duma, and M. Rodzianko had s fierce encounter with him before te could be expelled.
Rasputin faced me and seemed to run over me with his eyes; first my. face, then in the region of the heart, then again he stared me in the eyes. This lasted for several moments. Personally I had never yielded to hypnotic suggestion, of which I had had frequent experi- ence. Yet here I felt myself con- fronted by an unknown power of "tremendous force.
The Russian statesman Stolypin, who had an equal loathing for Rasputin, was convinced that "the мад possessed great hypnotic power," which was 020
of the secrets of his evil infuence.
