YESTERDAY'S FREIGHT

RETURNS.

INWARD" CARGOES NORMAL.

'THROUGH FREIGHTS DOWN.

BRITISH VESSELS BEST CARRIERS.

The returns for the 24 hours ended at 9 am, yesterday showed that local imports of general mer chandise were normal and, that through freights had decreased con- siderably.

British vessels carried most of the inward freights and although only two vessels had cargoes for ports beyoad Hong Kong, the amount enfried represented half of the total amount of through cargoes.

The Colony's imports amounted to 16,000 tons, of which, 6,950 tons were contributed by four British

veascia.

The two best returns were shown by the s.s. Cheong Shing and the Aweiyung. The former vessel from Tientsin accounted for 3.350 tons

and the latter from Bangkok was responsible for 2,100 tons.

Through freights were carried by four vessels out of ten arrivals. The amount manifested was 3,100 tons. Of these two British steamers were responsible for 1,670 tons.

The two best returns were 1,170 tons on the s.5. Shantung (British) from Canton, and 730 tons on the Nitin Mary from Swatow.

During the period under review there were 10 Arrivals and 11 de partures. The nationalities were: British, arrivals and 2 depar-

tures; American, 1 departure; Norwegian, 1 arrival and depar tures; Japanese, 2 arrivals and departure; Chinese, arrivals and 3. departures: French, 2 departures. The following were the cargo car- riera:-

occurred in the Harbour early launch being sunk. yesterday morning, the Police

At about 4.50 a.m. the Police pinnace, which was in charge of Lance Sergt. Pearson, was steam- ing eastwards in the southern fair- way. The Hau. Hoi was approach- ing from the opposite direction. She was well laden with passengers and cargo and was on her way to Nam Tau district. She struck the Police crait amidship on the port. side.

The pinnace was badly holed but though shipping water rapidly Sergt. Pearson managed to get the craft to the Yaumati shelter. She went down in shallow water and her superstructure is still visible.

The pinnace is an old one. Formerly German-owned she ran in the harbour as the Hapag until converted into i Water Police patrol craft,
