ESCAPED DURING A CLASH WITH SOLDIERS.

A man named Leong Ping, who was kidnapped in a raid on Tai-O village early in the year, haa just returned to his relatives who had long since given him up for dead. He re-appeared on Friday, looking very much the worst for his terrify- ing ordeal.

The man said that he and a com- panion were carried off by bandits to their retreat in a territory whose name" he does not know. Both men were harshly treated, and Leong's friend died before help arrived.

Leong made his escape during a clash between Chinese soldiers and the bandita a severe struggle-and managed to slip away towards the seashore. He immediately pushed " of in a small boat which he found there, and rowed out to "ses until he met a junk, on which he was

The various reserves call for little comment. They have all appre ciated with the exception of the investment and exchange fuctua- tion account which, though, still standing at the very substantial figure of 8358,258.80, is less by $118,578.14 than at the same time last year. This decrease is due to shrinkage in the market values of our gold and silver, investments and to the high rate of exchange ruling, between Hong Kong and Shanghai,

I now propose the following

resolution:

"That the Report and Accounts. as presented, including the pay ment of a dividend of $40 per share, the transfer of £20,474.10.3, at exchange 1/11-8208,101.43, to the credit of Reinsurance Fund, and the payment to the Staff of 15 per cent. upon their salaries, be adopted and passed."
