MR. W. R. MORRIS'S BIG PURCHASE.

BID FOR WORLD TRADE.

MRS. BALDWIN AS POLITICAL HOSTESS.

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. ↑

LONDON, February 19th. The event of the week in the business world is the purchase of the great motoring firm of Wolseley Motors, Ltd, by Mr. W. B. Morris, founder of the famous enterprise which bears his name whose motor Cars, the Morris Ozford and the Morris Cowley, are now thown throughout the world. The Walse ley concern went into liquidation last November. The purchase price paid by Mr. Morris is £730,000. A spice of dramatic interest attaches to the deal as it is well-known that American financial interests were very eager to get hold of the Wolse- ley business, which has a high re- putation for first class motor cars, Mr. Morris will carry on his new venture on bis own business lines which have brought him fame and fortune in the case of the Morris cars. A new six-cylinder car is to be developed for sale at home and abroad

Mr. Morris'

already employs directly 10,000 people, apart from the army in other engineering works that depend upon his activities. As a result of his purchase be expects to have his payroll increased before long by 6,000 names. His hope is to start operations at once in order to take advantage of the spring motor season. Works, offices, de- pota and selling centres of Wolseley Motors, Ltd., have remained open, and they are to be re-vitalised in an effort to capture for Britain the big share in the medium-priced car trade now held by foreign manufac turers.

Overseas Markets,

But Mr. Morris is not the only motor-car manufacturer who is up and doing to extend business. The Society

of Motor Manufacturers and Traders are sanding out three very well known gentlemen as delegates to Australia and New Zealand to look over the country and make themselves thoroughly familiar with the conditions that prevail in the two Dominions. The three dele- gates are Mr. Boyd Carpenter, .P., Mr. Fenn and Colonel Hack

MORE TRAFFIC ON RHINE THAN EVER.

Sir Arthur Tapp, who has recent- I returned from visit to the British Army on the Rhine, told a press representative that Germany ready for the next great offen- sive.

This time, he said, her not mobilising her armed forces' for purposes of invasion and destruc tion, but her massed battalions of commerce are making a bid for com mercial supremacy. There is more traffic on the Rhine than I have ever seen before.”

Inquiries had convinced him that the people in Germany had a mind what were the hours so long to work, and did not seem to care

Lower Prices.

Sweaters

The mark is stabilised, and con- ditions generally are once more approximating normal. Food in slightly less costly than in Eng- land; fancy leather goods are much cheaper; while woollen and pull-overs are cheaper in Wies baden than in Leicester, where they are made. There are a considerable number of British motor-cars on the road, and they compare very far. ourably with cars of German make.
