NO NEWS OF THE → ELKTON","
FRUITLESS SEARCH BY U.S.A. NAVY.
LOST OR ONLY HER WIRELESS DESTROYED.
On Thursday we published an extract from a Mapila contempor- ary regarding the missing steamer Elkton, which sent out distress signals late one night last week. It will be recalled that the Liberator, which received the distress call, made a search over a radius of 200 miles, but was unable to find any trace of the ship, other than off floating on the rough seas.
Manila papers of last Sunday contain the following statement re- garding the steamer:
The fate of the freighter Elkton, of the American Pioneer line and its crew of 37 men still is not known in Manila. The boat sent out diy tress signals on Thursday night, giving its position as 138.30 degrees east longitude and 14.18 north latitude, or nearly 1,000 miles east. of. Manila. The distress signals were picked up by the steamer Liberator. This boat searched aver a radius of 200 miles but was unable to find the Elkton. Four U.S.A.
the destroyers, Preston, Sicard, Stewart and Paul Jones, were dispatched to search for the missing steamer, Radio mes sages received from the destroyers last night said they had arrived in the vicinity from which the Elkton scat out the distress signals but that no trace had been found of the ship.
Hope and Fear.
Hope has not been altogether abandoned and members of the ship- ping board staff think that the ter ride storm through which the Elkton was passing on Thursday night, washed the radio serial from. the • deck and that it was unable to send out messages. They believe, also, that the ship is still afcat and on its way to
ship

DOLLAR STEAMSHIP LINE
Honolulu Radio men frankly think the boat lost. They base their belief on the fact that the Elkton would be able to send a message even though the antenna had been destroyed. The ship would not be able to send a message for more than five miles, / but it would be an easy matter to provide a new antenna with a single "wire that would intercept or trans- mit a message for 1,000 miles or more.
According to naval officers, the destroyers will not be able to con- tinue the search for the vessel for more than 48 hours without an additional supply of oil. A detail- ed report on weather conditions and their findings, if any, in the region from which the Elkton reported its distress, is expected to-day,,
