AUTOMOBILE TROUBLES AND HOW ΤΟ AVOID THEM...

MR. C. D. LAMBERT'S INTERESTING LECTURE.

.:

GOOD ADVICE FOR INEXPERIENCED OWNERS AND DRIVERS.

The causes of various mishaps to motor-cars were explained for the brunt of inexperienced owners and drivers by Mr. C. D. Lambert, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Kowloon-Canton Railway it the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders of Hong Kong last evening.

Mir. Lambert read an exceptionally interesting paper on the subject of "Some Automobile Troubles and How To Avoid Them," before a large attendance of members and visitors, the audience including a number of the members of the Hong Kong Automobile Association.

Mr. L. J. Blackburn, Vice-President of the Institution, presided, and briefly introduced the lecturer.

At the outact of his paper, Mr. Lambert dealt with ignition mat- ters. He said: The, well known axiom that prevention is better than cure applies with exceptional force to motor vehicles of all kinds, if only because the happening which

In point of fact, however, there is as a rula ono very simple cause for such occurrences, and one which in very osally removed.

It is nearly always dua to a faulty connection in the circuit, and more often than not that the point is one or other of the battery terminals to which the main cables are secured. A corroded or loose terminal gives rise to a high resistance in the Draama circuit and when this re- sistance rises above a certain maxi-

In the course of my work as a repairer, on innumerable. occasions I have had to remonstrate with more or less experienced owners and drivers about their neglect of the most simple precautions against accident and mechanical derange- ment, and to spend no little time in explaining why such precautions were desirable and what might well happen if they were neglected..

Only when the misfire is found to be due to some cause other than a break in the high tension eircuit, is it safe to ignore the trouble and limp home or to the next pre- arranged stopping place.

To give a very simple example of what I mean let me remind the ex- perienced amongst my audience that they would never think of filling a dashboard fuel tank whilst a pair of lighted parafin side lamps re mained on their brackets, one o! them perhaps no more than twelve inches or so away from the filling orifice of the tank.
