LIFE.

Since he came to the throne of Kashmir just over a year ago His Highness aheajah Sir Hari Singh has brought about a number of reforms in the State which be inherited from his more conservá- tive uncle.

One of these reforms concerned the Swan Battalion of 300 awans, pure white, and headed by a creamy. coloured bird. Sir. Hori inherited the charge of these birds. His uncle believed them to be sacred ercatures belonging to Brahma-the Creator of the Hindu Trinity.

The birds had a special guard, who wore swan emblems, and the whole battalion " the royal tanks in the morning was taken to from the special enclosure in the Maharajah's palace and escorted back in the evening. The roads were closed to all traffic while the majestic birds waddled. forth.
