THE TROOPS FOR HONG KONG.

MAJORITY DUE TO ARRIVE NEXT WEEK.

DOUBLING THE COLONY'S EUROPEAN POPULATION.

HOW THE PROBLEM OF ACCOMMODATION HAS BEEN OVERCOME.

PRESENT ARRANGEMENTS.

As already announced, two Brigades of troops, the 13th and 14th Infantry Brigades, are to be stationed in Hong Kong for the time being. The whole of these troops, in twelve Inrge transports, are already on their way to the Colony. The Divisional Com-· mander, General Sir John Duncan, with the 1st Beds, and Herts. and the 2nd Border Regiment is due on the s Megantic.on- Thursday or Friday. The Minnegold with the Base Commandant Staff will probably be here on Thursday. The remainder, or the great majority of them, and expected next week.

A Brigade comprises four battalions and the strength of each battalion may be considered as approximately

and men. In addition, of course, there will be artillery--the 1st Field Brigade R., with field guns drawn by the latest type of tractors and the 4th Pack Brigado R.A., with 3.3 howitzers, and all the necessary auxiliary services, including a Mechanical Transport Company, an Armoured Car Company, a General Hospital and Field Ambulance. These will bring the total number of men for Hong Kong p to nearly 10,000.

The non-Chinese population of the Colony is estimated at *10,500, But this number. includes the representatives of many nationalities so that it is safe to say that the troops afriving will easily double the number of Europeans here. It would be impos sible to enumerate the thousand and one problems which have to be solved in providing suitable accommodation for this infox at such short notice but the officers of the permanent military estab- lishment are working at high pressure, and with the co-operation. of many business firms, it is believed that everything will be in readiness on time.

The Infantry Brigadau will go to camp immediately upon arrival, the 13th Brigade to Kwanti and the 14th Brigade to the Fanling Golf Course, the Hunters' Arms and other bungalows in the district being used as headquarters. They will remain there for two or three weeks. The 14th Brigade will then come into the billets which are being rapidly prepared for them in Kowloon whilst part of the 13th Brigade will go to a special Hut camp at Shamshuipe and the remainder to the Empress Hotel and to the barracks vacated by the Suffolks. The General Hospital and the Field Ambulance will be located, as already announced, at the Diocesan Boys School. The Marina, Kowloon, will be used for part at any rate of the Artillery. The Armoured Car Company will go to the Race Course, Happy Valley, and the Mechanical Transport Company to the Tannery in Kowloon TRANSPORTS ARRIVING.

It is impossible to give the exact dates of the arrival of the trans- ports. Much depends upon the weather. The following list shows when they are expected in normal

RIVER GUNBOATS ON THE WAY OUT.

A Reuters meange from Port Said, dated February 19th, says the destroyers anderer and Wolverine and the gunboats Aphic and Lady- bird have arrived there and were leaving far China the same night.

It is intercating to note that of the 31 cruisers now maintained in full commission in the Royal Navy, 13 are with the China Squadron. On January 20th there were only eight cruisers on the China Station, of which Ave were on the Yangtare. The dispatch of the First Cruiser. Squadron left fire in the Mediter ranean, six in the Atlantic, four in North America, two in Africa, and one in the East Indies.

As shown above the China Station. Rect is being augmented by the addition of the two river gunboats, the phi and Ladybird. These vessels are of G45 tons each. Up to May, 1991, the Aphis, and until April, 1922, the Ladybird, were employed on patrol duty on the River Danube. Then they were paid off at Malta and have since been in charge of care and mainten- ance parties.

For the command of these, two Lieutenant-Commanders have been chosen from the battleship Kaliant, in the Mediterranean, L-Comdr. LV. Donne for the Ladybird, and L-Comdr. H. T. W... Pawney for the Aphis....”

The destroyers Wanderer, Comdr. L H. K Hamilton, D.S.O., and Wolverine, Lt.-Comdr. M. S. Spald- ing, DS.C., hitherto in reserve at Malta, if conditions permit, will relieve the Wolicy and Woolston, which will then return to Malta, but it will be quite possible for them be retained in China case of need, when they will form two useful ships to add to the total at the disposal of the Admiral.
