The celebration of Chinese New Year is seldom, complete without some form of gambling, for on this day the Chinese "try their luck out" and if they win only a few cents, the omon is a good one, and they may venture on any enterprise, even a risky one.
Following out this belief a num ber of Chinese betook themselves to a house in Wanchai, where they | were engaged in a game of Paikuu, but unfortunately they had the ill-luck to be raided by the Police, and the sequel was heard in Court yesterday morning.
Led by Delective-Sergeant Roze- skwy, a party of police visited a watchmaker's shop at Wanchai, where the said game of paikan was in progress, and caused a stampede. Seventeen Chinese, wera taken into custody, of whom only five appeared in Court when the case was heard yesterday at Central Magistracy, before Mr. R. E, Lind

Sergeant Rozeskwy stated that the game was played in the rear of the premises, and in addition to the men who played dominces, there were also four others who made up mah-jong party in front part of the establishment. These latter, however, were not arrested.
