MOVEMENT TO IMPROVE THEIR LOT..
SUCCESSFUL, INAUGURAL
BUTTER WRAPPED IN A
£40,000 WILL. PARIS COURT HEARSA STRANGE CASE.
The story of how a will, involving an inheritance of a million gold. francs (£40,000), was found wrapped round a pat of butter bought in an open-air village market, was recent ly unfolded before a Paris court.
Mme. Berthon, a wealthy widow, of St. Ezicone, died in 1005, leav BISHOP VALTORTA'S APPEAL.ing, as was generally supposed, her
MEETING.
A strong effort is to be made in the immediate future to ameliorate the lot of local ricksha and chair coolies. It is proposed to inaugur- ate a movement on a non-sectarian
basis, and to invite the assistance, sympathy and support of all reli- gioas denominations, charitable or ganisations, and the public in general of this Colony.
At a meeting held last evening at the Italian Mission House, above Caise Road, for the purpose of con. sidering ways and means to improve the conditions of Hong Kong's rick- sha and chair coolies, a provisiona! committee was appointed to investi- gate the matter, and they will at a later date lay tentative proposals and suggestions before a public meeting which will be called for the purpose of considering them, and, if though it, of approving and Anancially supporting the scheme ultimately adopted.
It was stated at the meeting that the idea was to improve the lot of the class of coolies referred to on similar lines to these adopted at Shanghai bat adapting the scheme to local conditions. Several ambitious schemes were put forward and many suggestions were made, and it now remains for the provi. sional committee to work, these out. and draft a programme which will meet with the most urgent require ments of the rieksha and chair
coolies..
Bishop Valtorta's Initiative, The meeting was called by Bishop Valtorta, who spent many years as A missioner in Hoitoong aad Wei- fcong" the two principal centres which supply this Colony with its ricksha and chair coolies. Bishop Valtorta is keenly interested in the movement, and is anxious that something shall be done to improve the lot of these beasts of burden." The Bishop's plea, contained in a circular issued on the subject, was published yesterday.
Bishop Valtorta presided at last evening's meeting, and among other interested persons present were Mr. J. M. Aives and Ir. George Zim- mėra.
The Bishop said that they were not concerned so much with increas ing the coolie's earnings-for be bad
fortune of a million Irancs to her godchild. Claudine Chavanne, the four-year-old daughter at Roor parents. The will, however, could not be found, and the natural heirs took possession.
