fis personality was as charming as the fragile beauties he painted When I knew him as a professor ai the Sinde Schoot, his shy, almost tinidhinner, his curious UA- bruken voice, the hesitating gestures his hands al pointed to the dreamer and recluse rather than to the fashionable portrait painter Bat when his long fingers, more those of a musician than & painter, curled round one's pencil or brush, and his voice rose from a husky whisper to the shrill tones of a beg, nary far of enthusiasm and inspira tion which poured from him. Sad- denly, he would blush and hurry away, leaving one as if flushed with. victory-confident that there
was nothing one could not perform.
Then the war called him and Losdon knew him no more til he reappeared as the painter of lovely ladies and their as lovely children. The transparency and luminosity of his colour, and the ethereal beauty which he gave to his sitters singled him out at once from the common run of portrait painters.
This was in part the expression of his own personality; und in part a trick of posing. His portraits were many of them painted it a white tiled studio- converted hathroom-clec trie lights were hung behind the honda and outilung hands of his sit ters, and gave an effect of spiritual. ity to the flesh tones.
One of his latest portraits is of
Princess Mary's son, the Flon.
George Hubert Lascelles. You see at a glance the striking resemblance to his mother. Here is an English ched standing is a simple natural pose, looking with wondering eyes at the world. But it is more than a ebild portrait; McEvoy has ex- pressed royalty: its burden and its pride.
The picture of his which I most liked was a portrait of his mother painted before the war and before he had perfected his style. It was remarkable for ita beauty of paint, but more
an expression of motherhood, of the love between her and her son.
MA
It used to be said at the Slade " that McEvoy painted oils with his handkerchief and water colours with a sponge, because of the lovely aid quality which he always got into his paint. Rather, he knew superbly well hot oc a pale manc chrone to iny these touches of tchder contrasting colour, which modeled his forms.

In addition, there are the costs of numerous interlocutory proceed 3g3, running over many months, the court fees of attending solici tors, the expenses of shorthand writers and printers, and "various other incidental items.
