HOW CHANG TSO LIN ENTERED PEKING.
STREETS SPREAD WITH
At Peking that day yellow earth, the mark of the passage of an Em peror, was spread over the streets from the East Station to the West City over which Marshal Chang To Lin was to travel on his arrival.
YELLOW EARTH..
Marshal Chang Ts Ein, and staff high officers, and a considerable The Tung Puo, one of the lead-bodyguard entrained at Tientsin ing vernacular dailies of Tientsin, Central for Peking on December reports (on December 17th) that six 27th wheur many local personages out of the fourteen Kuomintang saw them off. members are sick in their celis at the Headquarters of the native city police and that their illness is a result of their fear of capital penal ties as once threatened by the mili- tary authorities. The paper further says that the Kuomintang men are being well-treated and each of them is allowed twenty cents for food per diem, while at night, they are supplied with one blanket each. which is taken away by warders Jevery morning. But unlike ordinary prisoners, the Kuomintang men are not permitted to see their relatives
or friends.
During the course of the last three weeks, the men were brought twice before the Chief of the Judicial Department of the native city police for trial; but no verdict was rendered. There was no beating of any sort, which was formerly ex- perienced at native courts ol
justice; but for the purpose of strik. ing terror into the minds of the Kuomintang men, during their last trial all sorts of terrible-looking
anti-criminal implements or tools were exhibited before their eyes. This exbibition of ancient cruel anti-crimical tools was chiefly re- sponsible for the illness of six of the young Kuomintang" members, adds the Tung Pao.
MARSHAL WU AND THE NEW GOVERNMENT.
THE REAL ́HINDRANCE.
The real hindrance to the estab- tishment of a military government in Peking by the Mukden party has been Marshal Wu Pei Fu, ac- cording to word received here from Tientsin, says Chung Mei. The present Regency Cabinet is a cou- tinuation of the Government or ganized by Premier Yen and ap- proved by Marshal Wu.
Marshal Chang Tao Lin wired Marshal Wu soliciting his opinion in the matter. In his reply, Mar- shal Wu deɓnitely stated the follow ing three points :-
1. He will fight to the end against the Reds.
2. He wishes to, entrust every- thing in connection with politics to Marshal Chang, as be is a military
man.
3. The first thing to be done
under present circumstances is to
maintain the relationship with the diplomatic group in Peking. After the military campaign is over, be will request Marshal Chang to call
to settle all national affairs.

EXECUTIONS AT HANKOW.
A BRUTAL EXHIBITION.
Three Chinese, two Cantonese and one Hapehese, were recently abot to death in Hankow, for having attempted robbery while imperson ating members of the Nationalist Army. One of them was dressed in uniform, and the other two wore civilian clothes.
They were shot just outside of the German Cemetery, on Han Chung Road, Special Administra tive District, opposite the 8.A.D police atation, by a squad of sol- diers. Pistols were used in the work of execution, which were not fired at close range, and the work of putting these criminals out of the way took on an aspect of a sport ing event rather than the carrying out of a death sentence.
A great number of shots were fired at the condemned, who were riddled with bullets. After per forming their task, the execution squad left. A few minutes later, one of the outlaws was found to-be still alive, although badly damaged by bullets A telephone call from the police station summoned the soldiers back and they put this un- fortunate out of the way by fixing ht him while he lay on the ground The execution was a most inhumane piece of butchery.
The bodies were left lying in the road all the day for all to see and take warping. Thousands of idle and curious packed the thorough- fare to see them, but it was a silent crowd, scared and ready to jump at the slightest word from the police men on duty.
Soldiers of the 157th and soth battalions of the garrison forces, one regiment of gendarmes and police lined the streets from the station to the home of the Mukden warlord."
By order of the police, all mer- chants are displayed the five colour flag of the Republic.
Sun Jun Yu, first secretary to Premier Roo, and officials of all of the Ministries awaited the arrival of the Warlord at the East Station from -8-p..
Marshal Chang Tao Lin arrived, however, somewhat later, actually
at 3.25 p.m.
The railway station was fully Kuarded by troops of the Young Marshal and Peking garrison and police guards
A triumphal arch was erected out- side the station with the inscrip-
tion "Welcome.”

As a result of the steady progress of the Kuomiachun from Honan, it is believed that the Northern forces will go South, whether or not they are called by Marshal Wu Fer Fu
The attitude of the Loyang war- lord is described as ambiguous" in the wire; it is not known whether he will enter the campaign against the Cantonese in the South; go to the Shensi border, or retire.
Marshal Wu's decision will be based on the actiods of his lieuten-- ants, it is said.

DUELLING. IN FRANCE.
ELABORATË PREPARATIONS
AND A WOUND.
A duel with swords was recently fought in the Parc des Princes, in M. Bernard Denisane concerning a Paris, between M. Serge André and alleged insult in a newspaper article written by M. Denisane.
Elaborate preparations were made for the encounter. Each principal was instructed to bring his own weapon, and was allowed to wear the usual fencing gauntlets. The men were told that their costumes were to be the regulation cotton blouse, linen shorts or trousers with belt, of which the steel buckle was to be fastened behind, and that they could wear either shoes or boots
The duellists arrived with their seconds and two doctors punctually at the appointed spot. Both men had their gauntlets pierced many times in the opering encounters, but' it was not until the twelfth engage- ment that M. André received a thrust through the elbow which penetrated to the bone. The doc tors examined the wound, and on their advice the seconds stopped the fight. Both men then shook hands, and were reconciled.
