Wolfe and Mr. ". M. Dyer. The fold! lined up in two ranks and was despatch-. ed by Commander Broadley, About 30 yards from the start there was a fair sized jump and its negotiation caused trouble to several riders. At the second check the field divided and the bunch that followed the right course never looked back, afterwards. The finish was a close one and good old Reynolds judiciously ridden by Stanton eventually proved the winner. Potts led the fold practically the whole way but on coming through the wood near the finish he bad the misfortune to go straight on instead The order cr o turning to the right. duishing was as follows:-

1.-Stanton's Reynolds. 2-Keidy's Mowgli. 3-Pym's Two Pairs. 4-Capt. Browne's Bertram. 5.-Potts Craigavad.

HAPPY VALLEY.

New Your's Day Race. Many years ago a race was started on New Year's morning in Shanghai for

♫ with 'distance non-winning ponies handicap. Since then this race has been supplanted by a regular race meeting. One at cur more enthusiastic young- riders has arranged a similar race at Happy Valley, on-New Year's morn com moncing at 11 o'clock. It is essentically! a gathering for owners riders, jockeys" and their friends and it is hoped that ladies will turn out in force to add a' little tone to what may otherwise be an unstable stable gathering. Intending riders and owners should send in thei names to either Mesers. W. Starton or E..A. Brodie es early as possible so that the handicaps" can be arranged. above event will tend to brighten local racing and those behind it deserve our I almost congratulations and thanks. 'forgot to mention that a cap will be presented to the winner of the race by a Johor who wishes to remain anonymous.
