́** TÀYY II." WINS ANNUAL MACAO RADE

RECORD TIME MADE DESPITE WEATHER.

The annual race of the cruisers of the. Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club to Macao and back, a distance of 71 miles, for the Patta' Challenge Cup, was held on Sun- day".

Ten boats started, and all but two completed the course, and were back at the Yacht Club shortly after midnight within record time. The start was made from the Club at 7.30 am, and the lead- ing boats got back in remarkable time, despite the heary seas experienced throughout, and wintry conditions. In fact a record time was created.

The race was won, on corrected time. by Tary which completed the course shortly before 11 o'clock, and was within her handicap by twenty minutes over Lady death

The wind was pretty high throughout the race. At times it reached force a (about 40 miles an hour). This, com- bined with the heavy sea tested all the boats very severely. The Coquette Tost' her rudder, and was eventually towed in. from Tai O yesterday morning.

The second boat which failed to com- plete the course was Brenda, which gave up shortly after 10 a.m., having got inte dificulties in the heavy sens. One of her sails was ripped up and she shipped so much water that it was decided not to continue the race.

The time made by the leading boats is a record for a period of over twenty years' sailing. In the last century when this race was an annual event. The best times made then by boats of over 30 tons was 18 and 18 hours, for the passage.

"The Yachts Participating.

The yachts participating in the race, and their helmsmen, were as under:-. La Cigale (Mr. N. V. A. Croucher). U. and I. (Mr. E. S. Rouse).

Coquette (r. H. Dreyer). Feathers (Mr. Nicholson). Norseman (Mr. C. L Edwards).

Queen Bre (Mr. Howard).

Dorothy II. (Mr. E. S. Carter). Lady Jean (Mr. H. J. Pearce) Brenda (Mr. King).

Tavy II. (Lt.Cdr. Leveson-Gower). The boats left Murray Pier on Sunday morning, these seeing them off being the Commodore of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (Mr. E. W. Carpenter), Mr. C. Van Andel and Mr. V.. Goulborn

The sailing wind was then at about force 3, and all the boats made a good run down the harbour." The first to cross the starting line were Norseman, Coquette, U. and I. and Za Cigale, in the order named, with the others "not for behind.

Queen Bee and Lady Jean were the only two boats to take rante south of Lantao Island. The remainder chose the Capsuimun run.

When Capauimun was passed the wind was blowing at force 5, and outside the harbour the sea was found to be rough with the increasing wind.

U. and I was first through Capsul mun, and was followed by La Cigale and Feathers. In less than two hours G. and I was off The Brothers

The first boat to give up was Brenda, which had to put into Gin Drinkers' Bay, shortly after passing through Cap- Buiman, on finding the seas too rough. She waited until the afternoon for the weather to moderate, and then returned to Hong Kong.

As in the past, a junk with to Macao. La Cigale going rather to northward, had to drop considerably; Feathers kept a middle course between and I, and La Cigale, followed by Coquette.

When the leading boats by the north were nearing the mark, Lady Jean, who had gone by the south and rounded the zark was seen to be making good way on the return. Queen Bee, which had also gone by, the south, did not do so well. She went back also by the southern route, but Lady Jean steered for the north.

It was closed-hauled work all the way across to Lantao with a very short, steep ser and it was obvious that the boats with the longest water line would fare best. Feathers showed up remarkably well and carried all her sail, wherea some of the other bosts had to reef down.. La Cigale, was making good efforts to get up with Lady Jean, but the Chinese rigged boat was making fine progress.

The two boats went through Capsui- mun together just before darkness fell, "U. and I. being then a little westward of The Brothers with Feathers some dis-

tance ahead. La Cigale eventually Teached the Yacht Club just before eight o'clock, Lady Jean being only a minute. behind her. Feathers went through Cap- suiman third but D. and I. outsailed her in the harbour and reached the Yacht Clab about 0.45, followed by Feathers twenty minutes later. Other boats, came in during the night."

Tasy 11, the winner, took the south course on the way back

'BRITISH SHIP MUTINY?

A strange tragedy, the details of which are as yet a mystery, occurred early this month on board a British steamer in the Tagus. The maritime police, who are in charge of the case, admit that a man has been killed.

It is reported that a mutiny broke out among the crew," who killed both the master and the first mate before the rising I was put down by the other officers.
