LONDON, December 2nd. Speaking in London, at his farewell function, the Australian Prime Minister, Mr. S. M. Bruce, who is leaving for Australia to-day, referred to the recep tion accorded to General Hortzog, in South Africa.

Mr. Bruce expressed the opinion that while General Hertzog had left his Dominion with the minds of the people divided and with no certainty as to the future there was now. in South Africa a removal of all those doubts and a profound spirit of satis faction and the will to co-operation and unity, which had never previously exist ed: If the conference had accomplished nothing else, that in itself was a great achievement.

Mr. J. W. Franks, Superintendent of Victoria Gool, when instituting criminal proceedings against an Indian Warder at the Central Magistracy yesterday morn ing before Mr. R. E. Lindsell, said that offences of such a nature, as that which he was alleging against the defendant, would lead to a serious laxity in prison discipline, and the departmental powers conferred on him were not, sufficient to deal with a case of this nature.

A Hankow message of yesterday's date states that an unpleasant incident was narrowly avèrted at 10.30 a.m., when 330 Chinese soldiers tried to march through the Concession, along the band.
