The first of the two Christmas Matinees was held. Inat night at the Theatre Royal, and I think all the children pre- sent, and a great many of the grown-ups will want to go again to-day. The scenery from. first to last is so beautiful, and the lighting so carefully controlled, that Hong Kong will be reminded of that year when Mr. Siuclair gave us the four Dunsany Plays, and that is all too long ago. Small voices from, up- stairs and down were calling for more of the lairies, more of the elves.

The short curtain raiser of these spirits dancing in the gloom was an excellent introduction to the Pastoral Play which followed. This Fhantasy, which was previously acted in the open air at Bens lining

This entertainment is the most de- lightful of its kind that has been given China Lights (combined). in Hong Kong for a long time, and one feel sorry for the child who misses it.

The second half of the programme was in the nature of a variety show of fun and laughter, And received rounds of applause, and calls for mere.

Unfortu- nately, time forbad the complete pro- gramme being played... It opened with Christmas in Toyland showing how wooden and mechanical the graceful pupils of Miss Capell can become when it suits them. Kewpies, Felix, Clown, Beautiful prim dolls and the top drum major were all represented, and ao- "centuated their peculiarities to the toy life.

Shadow pictures followed, an assort. ment to suit all tastes and ages. 3fra.. Hole was particularly pleasing in ber accompaniment. silhoutte with Bong. Eng.-Lt.-Com. The red and black chorus followed and was recalled from the wings by cries for more. Come, Lassics and Lads" has

delightful refrain and this part of th entertainment was most able accompanied by Mrs. F. C. Hall. Her confidence sad precision are very valuable asset to chorus work, and Mrs. Russell-Brown and, M. Green sang us songs while the red and black chorus showed us new steps for our Christmas dances.

Carols were introduced in an original manner to wind up an excellent evening: the Theatre Royal should be full to-day, I'did not notice many service men present at the first performance and I feel that

any of the soldiers and sailors in the Helsingfors ...... Colony would enjoy this most cheerful entertainment.
