SOUTHERN TROOPS IN CIVILIAN CLOTHES.
MARSHAL SUN'S COUNTER- PREPARATIONS.
The local war situation is by no means as serious as contemporary reports would suggest, according to the latest informa- tion received in Shanghai, says the Shanghal Mercury of December 18th.
Our contemporary goes on to give an Amusing picture of the Southern Army's supposed methods of achieving its report ed victories -
For instance, the so-called "occupa tion" of the Chekiang provincial capi- tal, Hangchow, by Southern troops, amounts to nothing more than the entry into the capital of a couple of thousand Southern troops Gressed +1 civilian clothes, without any great display of arms and with anything but a warlike Their entry into Hangchow was simply characteristic of many simi- lar moves made by the Cantonese since they launched the present anti-Northern campaign.
manner.
Propaganda!
A small force, dressed in civilian clothes, proceeds to the city which is the next objective of the main army, and inspects the "lay-out" of the place, spreads a little propaganda, commits an net or two of sabotage, and generally puts the populace into a state of mild terror which reacts upon the opposing broadcasted among them. In other words, they prepare, the atage for the grand entry of the uniformed member's of the expedition.

PROPAGANDA IN THE DUTCH
EAST INDIES.
DESTROYING THE GOOD NAME OF THE EUROPEAN.
Mr. Edward E. Long, writing from the Savage Club to The Times on the Dutch East Indies revolt, says:
AN
In the summer of last year I returned to this country from an extended tour of the Dutch East Indies, and I can vouch for this-that everywhere I went I found traces of Bolshevism, clothed in Com- munistic garb. After visiting Java, Bali and Celebes, I journeyed on the Moluc cas, and found in Amboyna, their capital, a number of Communists and a paper strongly Communist in sentiment. I went on from Amboyna to Saporea, Banda, and the hei Islands, and, landing at Toeal, the Kei capital, one morning, with the captain of Koninklijke Paketvuart Maats- chappij steamer, on which I was a passen- ger, I heard him utter a very angered exclamation. On asking the reason he pointed out to me a Tocal antive who was walking near us, along the pier. ab.... sorbed in a newspaper, printed, I believe, in Dutch-Malay. "But cat you prevent it?" asked I.” “No,” he replied, unless I strip and search every passenger I take on board, and I can't do that; "and even then I suppose copies of this paper-it comes from am. boyna-would be smuggled on board somehow, they are so canning, these Bol shevist people, and so many are willing
to aid them."

Perhaps when it is too late the son-Bolshevist nations of the world will realise the immense amount of harm 'Bolshevism is doing in destroying the good name of the European through out the Eastern world. If only they could be brought to see the need for counter- propaganda now!
This plain-clothes vanguard entered Hanebow on December 15th and almost immediately word was circulated throughout the city that the Reds had captured the city. These rumours were immediately transmitted to Shanghai without verification and the Southerners' end was achieved-they were reported as being in possession of Hangchow.
