An account of the opening of the trial appeared in our issue of Thursday.
It took the jury of eleven men and one woman only 20 minutes to make up their minds, and directly the foreman an- nounced that their verdiet was Not Guilty there was an outburst of applause in the crowded court, above which rose the voice of Mr. Justice Mackinnon, who said,The prisoner will be discharged.".
The trial, which lasted for two days, dealt with what Mr. J. D. Gassols, E., who prosecuted. described as the strange household of Summer House Farm, where perhaps the penalty was be ing paid for the unusual disparity in the
of the parties concerned." Mra-Crouch x 59; her husband was 43. Mr. Cassels, in opening the case, told the court how for some time Mrs. Crouch had complained of a friendship between her husband and a 24-years-old domestic servant named Miss Dorothy Smith.
Her Own Story.
A frail, thin-featured little. woman wearing a heavy fur coat' and a black hat with aigrettes, Mrs. Crouch was the sole witness in her own defence.
When her first husband died in 1920, she said, she married Mr. Frank Crouch, who was then a commercial traveller. Three years later they went to live at Summer House Farm, she having lent her busband £1,100. A man named Smith was engaged as stockman and with bis daughter Dorothy went to live in a cottage near the farmhouse.
Dorothy became a servant or help at the farm, and then trouble began. There w23 a certain amount of scandal, which fet frst she discredited, but later, when | she told her bushand she believed there was something in it, he replied, "The girl thinks the world of you. I would' not part from you for £20,000, old girl.”
Mrs. Crouch went on to tell how sho had seen her husband and Miss Smith kissing in the scullery, how they had been together in the garage and else where.

Next came stories of blows from her husband and a visit she paid in June to a friend in Paris. While there she bought a revolver she saw in a shop window..
Suicide Contemplated.
'Why did you buy that revolver 1”. quietly asked Mr. Norman Birkett, E.C., her counsel, in a broken voice, she replied: "Because I wanted to take my life. It was a nightmare, and I didn't know how else to do it.
"At the inst moment," she added, "I could not do it. I remembered that my husband's parents, who were over 80, were in the house, and for me to kill myself while they were there would have been a terrible shock for them."
Describing the Enal scene, Mra Crouch said:-
"Directly I reached the farmhouse my husband came in. He followed me into the drawing-room and said, What have you been doing at the cottage?' and be fore I could answer he knocked me down. "While I was on the floor he kept knocking me, and while I was lying there I felt the revolver pressing against my leg.. I pulled it out because I thought if he saw it be would leave off hitting
"I swear I had no intention of firing at him either then or at any time. But one shot went off, I think, into the ceil ing. My husband then seized my wrist. and while he held it a second shot went of My husband said My God,' stag gered and got up and went to the door." Mish Smith and her father arrived, and she heard her husband say "Fetch a doctor," and saw him helped upstairs to his bedroom. "I heard that he was dying," said Mrs. Crouch, but I could not go into his bedroom; I was too shaken." 12 She admitted that she went into another room and lighted a cigarette because she was shaken."
"Shot" at Counsel.
There was a dramatic moment when Mr. Cassels handed Mrs. Crouch the re- volver she used. "Take that," he said, "and show us how it works."
Calmly Mrs. Crouch, held the weapon but could not pull the trigger because of the safety catch. With fumbling fingers she released the catch and then, raising the pistol and pointing it. to wards counsel, pressed the trigger several timed
