THE POET-LAUREATE 82.

Dr. Robert Bridges was 82 last month, says the Evening Standard, and it is unlikely that he will now do anything to alter his reputation of being "the least- known Poet Laureate," His muse is, however, still fairly active, and à now volume of verse appeared last year, which showed that he had not shed his idiosyn- crasies in matters of punctuation and abbreviation. This volume was violently attacked by one critics as pedantis balderdash, if feeble and flat

· Dr. Bridges is essentially' a "highbrow": Intellectuals and fellow professional writers delight in his work and proclaim him one of the foremost living poeta. To the majority, apart from a few lyrics, his Jong sentences, and complicated metre conveying very subtle thought and word pictures, mean very little. Read aloud by one who knows and appreciates them" the poems take a new beauty.
