RACING NOTES.

[BY RAPIER.)

In view of my remarks on Handicap- ping and the shortage of jockeys the following extract from the Norik-China Daily News and Herald is not without interest:-

The Jockey Shortage."

The remedy for the jockey shortago has pot yet been found, or if it is known it has not been put into operation. Of the 43 Arsta, 35 were shared by soren jockeys of established reputation, includ ing. C. Referring again to handicaps, the in- creasing number of which undoubtquly has done much to level up local racing, it does seem a pity that all the three local clubs do not come to an agreement; either that there shall be a fixed minimum and. maximum weight, or else that the highest and lowest weights for each in- dividual handicap shall be announced before the entries close. Ourselves, wel Hoojum (Miss Lewis), Daphne (Mrs poked a little fun at the handicapper, Claridge), buenose (Mrs. Mitchell), without in any way meaning to wound, Wonder? Now, it is as certain na anything can be in racing that if the two had race at those weights, or even if Ultimus had been allowed another 5 lbs, to bring him down to about the lowest weighs at which the better jockeys can ride, Rosebery, it ho had been required to do so, could have won. At the same time, the owner would have been risking serious injury to hia pony by sending him out under; such a tremendous weight, so the allot- zing of it practically meant the elimina- tion of the pony. The good ponics should be given the chance to run and it would; each other under carefully adjusted be far better to see them running against weights than to watch the vain struggles. of a mob of indifferent animals who could not win whatever their allowance.
