A hundred vivid glimpses of life in the British Navy are given in the new British Alm. The Flag Lieutenant "; which has been shown..for the first time at the New Gallery Kinema in Regent Street. The play may be described, as light-hearted comedy-drama. It is a first- rate entertainment, and also the type Be of Alm most desirable. "The Admiralty permitted many scenes to be taken on board H.M.S. Tiger, and I am glad to say there have been few more beautiful or intriguing sights soen as yet on the screen.
There is the majestic background of the British Navy, and a cleverly-projected tale of a gay and genial young Flag Lieutenant, a manly type of hero, and a charming film sweetheart who, as an Admiral's daughter, shows much natural grace and breeding. The heroine in question is Misa Lilian Oldland; and I have heard the just comment that film stars anywhere might with advantage

A couple of years ago one seldom beard the subject discussed; now never a week passess without anmber of articles in the Press on the subject. The Crosswords Puzzle Craze, Instead of getting out of favour by the public becoming tired of it, the cross- wards puzzle etaze is going stronger than ever, if that be possible. It is said that it is responsible for a million extra" letters daily passing through the post office in London, according to an in- vestigation made a few days ago. For years the G.P.O., have had a special division for dealing with what is known as competition work; but of late it has been necessary to organise a special de partment for crosswords puzzles. The present year has been a record one.
Probably the explanation is that for some months past big prizes have been" offered for correct solutions. Some of these competitions for successfully, jug gling with words carry £1,000 as the Brat prize, and hundreds for second place. In many instances syndicates are. running them, and in other cases "they are promoted by newspapers. An en- trance of one shilling usually is required, and evidently there is plenty of money in it over and above what is paid out in prizes. An official at the G.P.O., states that last week the special depart mentreferred to above dealt with 1,214,000 entries in the one day. In the City alone there are at present about 50 competitions in progress
