LACQUER AND COLOUR EFFECTS,
JAPANESE CRAFTSMEN BUSY IN ENGLAND.
London artistic circles are discovering, more and more, the charm of things Chinese. In this article reprinted from the Daily Mail a vivid, description is given of the present day use of Chinese lacquer and how in such important decorative details as lampshades and cushions the West is turning for new ideas and inspiration to the Far East.
Until recently the beauty of Chiness art was only known to those who had been "cut East" and a small circle of connoisseurs,"
The desire for introducing a note of curious part is that they do not teach colour in a room still creates a good de-Japanese lacquer work, but Chinese, mand for lacquer furniture, which had a At one factory the Japanese manager, great vogue a few years ago.

When East Meets Wast,
Some people still think that lacquered furniture looks best by itself, but others; consider that it can be a thing apart in a Queen Anne room. The quaintest meet- ing of East and West is the grandmother clock in red lacquer.

Many Workers on One Lacquer Panek
The Japanese artist only makes the design, another clothes it with à .com- position, which raises it up; another covers it with gold leaf; another polishes it so that the air is excluded and it may remain bright, as the lacquer of 200 years ago is to-day.
Other lesser artists paint in the ground- work, smaller artists still do the decora tive borders. But they all work without patterns; not drawing first, but evolving designs with their brushes,
Eastern Infnense in Desigus. Naturally, the designs have all the Chinese or Japanese leeking. That is why the work comes more easily to the Japanese than to the English, Lacquer- ed furniture with English designs makes it lose its character at once. It seems necessary for it to have a rock, a pagoda, a willowtrae, abird, and a Chinese figure.
- Englishmen Work With Japanese,
At one time modera lacquered furniture bad a reputation for being flimsy and gimcrack; drawers never åtted and cabi- nets easily came to pieces. That has all been altered since good English furniture making firms added lacquered furniture to their stock. They make the furniture and sometimes send it to the" lacquer factory to be decorated. The Flag Lieutenant, that light hearted comedy-drama, makes when translated into terms of motion-pictures at once an ideal, entertainment and exactly the type of British "film" most desirable.
