Mr. Kao, however, declined to discuss. these matters until he had consulted with the Government, and so far as Comrade Cheraich was concerned, this interview proved fruitless.
Undeterred by this rebuff the Russian Consul-General pressed Mr. Kao to dis cuss the matters in question. Mr. Kao refused on the ground that the questions were concerned with the Makden Agree meat of 1094, which represented an addi tional agreement to that reached in Peking between the Chinese and Russian Governments, and, therefore, the Mukden Government categorically refused to dia- cuss the questions independently of the Peking Government especially as there had been established in Peking a special delegation for the negotiation of Sino- Russian Affairs. Moreover, this delega tion had already waited a long time for the arrival in Peking of Comrade Cher-
nick.
Suddenly, on November 2nd. Comrade Chernich departed for Harbin on the pre- text of attending to his private alinirs, but a day or two later he called on Mr. Yu, the president of the Chinese Eastern Railway, and opened a conversation on railway matters The president replied that he could not discuss such matters until he had received instractions from Alukden.
LONDON'S CHINATOWN: FACT AND FICTION. FRACTION OF LIMEHOUSE- CHINESE.
In the course of a charming article which appeared. in the. Daily Mail of October 18th entitied The Real Lime- house, the Rev. J. R, Powell, Hector of Limehouse, says: It was Mr. Lloyd George, in his more democratic daya who first made us famous. Poor Lime- house bow carnestly we can say, "Do- fend us from our friends, from our enemies we can defend ourselves.
Then Mr. Thomas Burke bid us listen at his whispering windows determined we should hear no good "of ourselves if he could help it. He drew up our blinds to show a delighted public Chinese and chimpanzees, murder and murk, opiom and original sin, prize fighters and public-bouses, women and wine,
Thus was born the Limehouse school of! literature. Ah, if life in Limehouse were only what our fiction writers picture it how exciting it would he to live in!
But to-day we have to endure parties whoace Limehouse" in motor-coaches. Parties will even descend on clergy late! at night and demand to be shown China-
town.
They find themselves in a perfectly orderly street, quiet as the grave, but they thrill with the thought that at any moment they may be stabbed in the back or "spirited away into an opium deo. Every grating distila for them the mysterious odours of some Eastern drug. The vivid imaginations of the short story writers enable them to penetrate the secrets of Chinatown to their hearts' con; tent. But never a "Beryl or D Стол cher" do they meet, not even a writer mourning for bis literary children be cause they are not.
It is a literary picture only; about as truc the real Limehouse as a delinea tion or English society life in an Ameri ean film.
Limehouse is not made up of bullies and hlien degenerates and sordid vice, but far core of hard-working, orderly men and women, generous, loyal, and humorous; of delightful children, friend- ly and full of life.
The old mercantile flavour of Narrow- street and Bopemakers Fields, the ever- changing pageant of Limehouse Reach, beloved of Napier Hemy, have far more. of romance, or adventure, of charu, than any of the much-vaunted streets of that fraction of us called Chinatown.
We firmly believe in a healthy mind in A healthy body; and every stecet has its ericket and football pitch. Our splendid local tradition insists that every member of the team shall bowl an over in turn and heralds the last ball with the cry, "Over going."
