It is often said that lookers on see most of the game. They sometimes fail, however, to get the facts.

DEPORTEES GIVE EVIDENCE.

The Talamba murder trial re-opened al the Criminal Sessions before the Chief Justice, yesterday. A. fresh jury was impanelled.

The prisoner was re-charged and plead ed not guilty.

The Attorney General, the Hon. Mr. J. H. Kemp, then addressed the court on the facts, as already recorded, following which evidence was called again."

Sir Arthur Shipley is, apparently, a famous man.. We have "locked him up " in Who's Who" and we and that he has a distinguished record. Not only is he an M.A., Sc. D, Hon. D.Sc. Prince-

the Louse.

Like many another learned man he apparently sometimes writes about things concerning which he is not very well informed.

In recent issue of a publication en- titled Discovery Sir Arthur Shipley has shown that he has discovered some-

thing that really ought to startle the inhabitants of this bright little, tight little island. He has taught the readers of Discovery how we really keep the brokers cut. (No reflections on Ice House Street-nothing keeps that sort of broker

out.

The brokers mentioned above are the gentlemen who sell up your Sunday, No Sailing goods and chattels, not those who make fortunes for you while you wait-a long time).

Nothing if not topical we have the following reference to our vexed problem of the water supply.

"in

"Water is abundant" (is it?) fact the original name of Hongkong- Hiang Kiang-means the place of sweet lagoons" and in level patches near the water-edge rice, yams, and sweet pota toes are cultivated, but not in sufficient quantities to supply the inhabitants."

Then comes the real gem.

"The chief industry is quarrying stone, the granite being used for build- ing, but some of it is exported."

After making extended inquiries we have reason to believe that the wealthy Aberdonians who retire to their native town after a few years in Hongkong take back the granite needed to build their castles in the air. Most of the granite that is exported is used to build_castles in the air but some of it goes to Timbuc- 100 for bridge-building purposes for the rivers on the Sahara desert.

A little later we read "The Prays, part of which has been reclaimed from the sca, forms an esplanade inrgely give over to the shipping industry."

But you ought to see the local Knuts" on the explanade! Hence the origin of the say inz Gentlemen prefer blondes."

ri

The main purpose of the contribution is to enlighten the readers of Discovery about the University of Hongkong Here again the learned author is not very accurate.

He writes "The University of Hong-

kong was incorporated in 1911 and open ed the following year as a resident univer- sity for both sexes.". Was it 1.

Mr. H. G. Sheldon closely cross-examin. ed one of the Chinese deportees, who was with the deceased when the alleged attack by the prisoner took place, as to hia connection with the gang.

A Blackmailing Gang.

In answer to questions, witness said that he thought the deceased was a mem- ber of the gang in question. The gang

called itself the Yee Hing Tong and its headquarters were in Singapore. The active members' duty was to collec: $1 a month from people. Everyone who knew anything about is was afraid of it and of its clutches paid to keep out Witness denied that he was a member

of the triad society in question." He had heard about and he had been told by month. They told him that when he members that he would have to pay 81

was out of work or sick he could go and stop at the gang's quarters but he thought that was an excuse to get money. Mr. Sheldon suggested that witness, the deceased and the other Chinese deportee who had been on deck at the time of the alleged attack were all active members of this blackmail gang and had helped to extort money from Chinese in Singa- pore. This witness denied..

Witness was wounded during the affiray. He thought that prisoner, must have mistaken him for the deceased, and stabbed him in consequence.

Another deportee related details of the stabbing. He said that prisoner attacked the deceased.

Replying to Mr. Sheldon he denied that prisoner was previously assaulted in the hold by the members of the gang. "Deceased was stabbed in the heart be added. He shouted Ayah, I will die and fell back dead on the deck."

The case was adjourned.
