Probably, observes an editorial in The Timce, the Filipino conception of inde. pendence is that the Filipinos 'should rule, and that the Americana should enforce their rule and protect their in- dependence. Drowned on Way to Macao, The master of the river steamer Sui An has reported to the authorities that at three o'clock on Monday afternoon, while the steamer was on the way to Macao from Hongkong, a second-class Chinese passenger jumped overboard. A life- buoy was thrown to him and a boat lowered. The man, however, was dead when picked up, although he was hang- ing ou to the buoy: On the arrival of the Sui in at Macno, the body was haźd ed over to the Portuguese police.
A remarkably good start was made, and the Tardia (t. Kooistra) went ahead. The Haining took second place, the Tjikarang third and the other Tjesurdea boat fourth. The other boats were bunched behind with the Lenon and Sunning in the rear. This order was maintained up to Kowloon Rock, except that the Dutch boat had increased her lead a great deal. The Cheung Shing was fifth, and the Awang Chow sixth, The rest were falling back. The Sui sung, Aiag Song and Hai Fang were struggling hard for seventh place. The M.C.C. leading Dutch boat was coming in fine style, and again increased her lead. The | Tjikarang, the third boat, at one time! crept near the Douglas boat but even- tually fell back again. At the Marked Boats, the Dutch boat was far ahead. and for the rest the order was unchanged, The fourth boat, the Tjerden, however, was-tery close to the third. The first boat in rounding Cest Rock Bucy was some 700 yards ahead, and the Douglass to tour the Argentine. boat was a good second. The Dutch boat won casily, and the Douglas. boat was a good second. A keen struggle ensued between the two Dutch bonts for third place, but the Tjikarang managed to keep her place. The other boats were far behind but most of them finished.
There was little that was exciting about the race The winning boat got ahead from the start and ran away with the
race.
The course was from Channel Rock, Kowloon Rock, Mark Boats, Cust Rock Buoy, and finish at the Yacht Club, a distance of about 41 miles..
The Freeontation. Later at the Yacht Club, Mr. E. W. Carpenter, the Cammodore, in présent ing the trophy silver cup to Mr. Kooistra, the coxsw of the Tjardin, said that they had witnessed the 0th race in connection with the "Trevessa" Ship's life boat competition. The trophy was for bi-annual competition and open to all-sea-going-ships-in the waters of the Colony on the day of the race. It was put up to commemorate the sterling seamanship, disciplinë, and endurance shown by the boat crews of the 5.3. Treressa after she was abandoned in mid-ocean.
The fact that 14 boats competed showed the popularity of the event and in this connection he would like to thank Mr. Van Ufford, the Manager of the Java, China and Japan Line, for so kindly having the names of the past winners recorded on the trophy, provision being also made for future winners-these re- cords added considerably to the value of the trophy. (Applause.)
Mr. Carpenter then called for chears! for the winning crew and for the runners up, and there was a hearty response.
Mr. Van Bord, replying, said that the Dutch people were extremely proud that one of their boats had again won the coveted trophy. The Douglas Company had won it three times in succession, and Assuredly the Dutch boats would make a strong lid for is next time so as to get even with them. It was, he added, a very fine race, and it showed that the sailors of the ships which came to Hongkong had a deal of man power in them. He horeover felt that such a competition gave an opportunity of cementing friend- ship between the members of the ships coming to Hongkong. He trusted that the same enthusiasm which had been shown in the race would be found, on future occasions. (Applause.)
Although no presentation was made, it is understood that Mr. R. Sutherland, of Messrs. Jardine, Matheson & Co., was giving a cup to the first of the Jardine boats in the race. This would be the Suisung, which came in sixth.
The Dutch were very jubilant in their victory. They had several launches fol lowing the boats, and when the 'jardia got in first, numerous crackers were fired, whilst the winning crew danced in their boat, and threw their caps in the air.
