A PIOUS MARINE POLICY.
Lloyd's List and Shipping Gazette announces the addition, through the courtesy of the P. & O. Company, to Lloyd's rooms of a photograph of a policy on goods in the ship St, Hary, made at Marseilles in the year 1684
There are copies of still earlier policies preserved in the public fiecard Office. The oldest original policy of marine insurance known to exist in Great Britain is that on goods in the Three Brothers, dated February 1636-more than 70 years after Sire Guillaume Puech caused himself to be assured in respect of the St. Hury,
The following additional particulara are given of the policy:Apart from its interest as illustrating the progress of marine insurance in the 16th century this old commercial document from Marseilles can make some claim on the attention of all historical students, for it bears the signatures of two men whose descendants have played a great part in the history of France.

NEW CURE FOR · MALARIA,
LUNATICS AS TEST PATIENTS.
BERLIN, September 90th.
The details of a new cure for malaria were, revealed at Düsseldorf, where the scientists and doctors' congress is be ing held Chemists of the Elberfeld Dyeworks had succeeded, it was stated. in making a synthetic preparation called Plasmochin," which is more effective than quinine in the fight against malaria. Tests have been carried out by Professor Muchlens, of Hamburg Tropical In stitute, on over 100 victims of malaria from all parts of the world after ex- Periments by Professor Sioli on lunatics who had been specially infected with malaria germs. The new medicine was found to work much effectively than quinine. In many cases the malaria parasites disappeared in a few days, as did the fever.
Plasmochin also got rid of the per maneat character of tropical malaria. which no cure has yet succeeded in doing. 31 And The combination of Plasmochin effective, declared Professor Muchlens, a small quantity of quinine is still more who added that the experiments with "Plasmochin were being continued at the Hamburg Tropical Institute and in Balkan countries.

Of this family was, the deputy Augier "Riquery" and the great grandson of Augier was Honore Riqueti, Comte de Mirabeau, the great orator and states- man, who so nearly changed the course of the French Revolution. A Pisus Policy.
In itself the policy contains many points of interest. As might be expected from its date it is an exceedingly pious document. Not only does it begin," In the name of God and of the Virgin Mary," but ejaculations of May God save it," "May God forbid” are scattered thickly over the document wherever the venture, or a possible casualty, are re ferred to. But for all its strangeness, there is much that is familiar in its clauses. The risk begins, The day and hour that the goods are loaded aboard the said vessel" at Marseilles, and continues until she shall have arrived at Tripoli, in Syria, and all the goods there dis- charged on lead in good safety" (a bon salvement), and the list of risks and perils accepted is very much like that in Lloyd's policy of to-day; though it is characteristic of the times that a special provision has to be made for furce majeure exercised by the ecclesiastical as well as the temporal-power.
A. Curious Prevision,
One curious provision throwing light on the commercial practice of Marseilles in the 16th century is that in the event
near future, the holders of the remaining shares in the Illustrated London News Land Sketch, Ltd. will be given an oppor tunity of disposing of their shares to the
new company.
The amount involve in the deal is, ap- proximately £3,000,000. The board of the new company will jaclude those respon- sible for the management in the past, together with certain directors of the Inveresk and associated companies. Mr. William Harrison will be chairman, and Mr. William Graham, chairman of the vendor companies, will be vice-chairman.
