The ingenious theory regarding atmos pheric electricity which Dr. Hur ad vance is this. The earth rotates on its axis at a speed of about 100 miles af second. The speed at the equator-the tropical part of the earth-is greater than anywhere else and the speed diminishes to zero at the poles. The new theory is that the rapid rotation causes friction between the earth's surface and the atmosphere. This sets up friction both in the atmosphere and on the earth. The terrible disaster which overtook the United States airship Shenandoah more tuan a year ago has now been fully investigated, and there is no doubt at all as to the cause. The airship was overpowered by, the elements. It was just as if a steamer bad been broken up in a typhoon. The only difference is that whereas sea captains have a warning of the approach of typhoons the skipper of this, airship got into air currents which were unaccompanied by any signs which the meteorologists can at present recog nise. She was a victim of natural forces in the atmosphere against which there is no method of guarding and concerning which there is very little knowledge.
