The only thing missed from the inters esting and rare ceremony of Trooping the Colour, carried out yesterday morning on the Marray Parade ground by number of picked men of the 1st Bat talion, the East Surrey Regiment, was the scarlet uniforms and glittering adornments which are so familiar in auch functions at Home, but, neverthe.. less, the parade was most impressive and spectacular. Further, it was carried through with a precision and thorough- ress which demonstrated the high stand- and of military training achieved by the 1st East Surreys, who are without doubt Bengnets. one of the finest and most highly trained Kai Alining a of the British infantry regiments. HE. Tha Governor Arrives. HE. the Governor (Sir:Cecil Clementi, K.C.M.G.) accompanied by Capt. C. H. Steele, MO. (A.D.Q.), was received. on arrival at 10.55 by Brevet-Colonel F. S. Montague Bates, C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O, who later took command of the parade; and was escorted to the saluting
base.
H.E. Major-General C. C. Luard, C.B., C.LLG., stood by the Governor at the salute in the March Past.
As the Governor entered the parade ground, be was received with the Royal Salute, played by the Band and Drums of the East Surreys.
The weather, despite cloudy and threatening skies, cleared beautifully shortly after the arrival of the Governor, the ground was flooded with brilliant sunshine, and glistened on the silver drums and bayonets.
Among those accommodated in the be- fagged enclosure immediately behind the saluting base were the entire Con- sular Body, with the exception of the Consuls General for Japan, Netherlands and Belgium, who were unavoidably ab- scat. Members of the Exécutive and Legislative Councils with their wives and friends were also present. Among others noticed were Rear-Admiral A. J. B. Sterling, C.B., RN, and the Bishop of Victoria (the Right Bev. C. R. Duppur). There were also present many 'Govern- ment oficials, prominent local residents, many military officers and also a repre sentative gathering of naval officers from the ships in port.
The Colour Trooped.
The Colour trooped on this occasion was the Regimental Colour, expressivo of the spirit of the Regiment, and not the King's Colour as was formerly an nounced. The practice of "Trooping the Colour" is a survival of an old guard mounting ceremony..
15
The Guards under the command of the Adjutant, Capt. J. W. Carpenter, M.C., entered the parade ground by way of Garden Road to the strains of Bab-el- Mandeb", played by the Band.
The Parade consisted of four "Guards" who were drawn up in line, facing the saluting base.
then The Drums the the Assembly" aa the signal for the officers and sergeanta to take up their posts, and the Adjutant handed over command of the parade to the Commanding Officer, Bt.-Col. F. S. Montague-Bates, C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O.
The Officers and Sergeants then joined the guards in a stately slow march across the parade ground, their arms at the Recover to the playing of El Bacio,"
The Band and Drams played the first honour to the Colour, in an impressive slow and quick troop up and down the ground playingLes Huguenots" and the lively El "Abanico."
The Escort for the Colour, proceeded by the Band and Drums, then marched across the Parade Ground to the strains The British Grenadiers "to receive
