Large Houses in Hong Kong have very little business which could not be well if not better carried on at Canton and Shanghae. In order, however, to show that Hong Kong is by no means wholly without Commerce or generally utility to the China trade, the Governor mentions that during 1849 there entered the Port no less than 896 square-rigged Vessels of an aggregate burthen of 293,711 Tons, being an increase on the previous year of 196 Vessels and 64,893 Tons; and that for the future, this change he believes is likely to take place, not from the Land Tax, but from there being fewer large mercantile establishments.

But he has thought it right to prepare Lord Grey for the probable removal, at no distant period, of some of the largest mercantile establishments. He contemplates that there will always be a good business for smaller traders and Warehouse keepers.
