BRITISH FILMS'
TRIUMPHS.
RUSH OF ORDERS.
£30,000 "MONS" BOOKINGS.
INQUIRIES FROM THE DOMINIONS.
LONDON, September 18th. Commercial success promises to attend the four first rate British films shown, to the trade in London this week Kinema propriators throughout the metropolitan area are hastening to book "Mademoi- selle from Armentières," "The Lodger,” *Mons," and Palaver for their theatres
Even from the provincos, where these films have not yet been shown to the trade, inquiries and orders are pouring
in.
"Mr. Gordon Craig, director of "the New Era Film Company, staled that their magnificent war picture "Mons bids fair to be the most successful British Blm ever made. It will be generally released on November 8th, following a special pre-release in London, where the film is to be shown at the Marble Arch Pavilion for six weeks.
Seventy-three copies of the film have, even so far in advance, been booked for axhibition, starting on November 8th, in Great Britain, and the number will in- crease.
*
The total bookings on "Mons" have reached £30,000 to date, and it is confi dently expected that they will reach more than double this amount, surpassing even the financial success of "Ypres."
Eager Exhibitors,
"Palaver," the same company's dé- lightful and unique film "of Nigeria, shows every sign of being booked to auch an extent is to cover its cost three times
over.
The Gaumont Film Company also re- part the most encouraging reception of their war romance, "Mademoiselle from Armentières.” Their office has been be- sieged since the early hours of Tuesday morning, immediately following the first exhibition of the picture on Monday right, by London exhibitors anxious to secure this picture and to pay sound prices for it.
Cabled inquires have been received from Canada and Australia, where all film business and most kinemas bave been in the hands of the United States Alm companies.
W. and F. Films report phenomenal bookings at very satisfactory figures on their film "The Lodger." The figures already exceed £30,000.
Poor Quality Myth.
It must not be supposed, however, writes a Film Critic that the creation of these pictures alone will ensure lasting victory for British films. These four films must be regarded first and foremost as a gallant demonstration on the part of British film producers of the capacity
of this country to make films second to none. They disprove finally the argu-

quota system, who, inspired by foreign influences, alleged that British films were inherently inferior to foreign ones.
It has been reiterated by more than one of the directors of the companies re- sponsible for the filma shown, this week that it would be impossible in the face of the present United States monopoly of our screens to maintain a consistent output of British films of this quality, and at the cost needed to ensure quality, unless & measure of reform comes to their assistance.
Imperial Conference. Many exhibitors anxious to book one or all of the four new British films are having to scrap one or more American films booked long in advance so as to find place for the British. This means s reduction in the price they would other wise be able to pay for these British films. It is confidently hope that, when the Imperial Conference in London has brought into its dus prominence the urgent necessity for worthy British films for the kinemas of this country and of the whole Dominions the Government will then be forced to introduce measures to protect home manufacture against for eign competition. The matter is one of Imperial significance..
