ambition was achieved a few months agħ with the opening of the most splendid stamp shop in Europe, formerly an old tailor'a shop in Vigo Street, Piccadilly. - Mr. Field, however, never saw the stamp palace of his dreams. be fought against ill-health, a legacy of the Klondike gold rush, and he made his last trip to London before his new pre mises were opened.

World Boarch. "Davy," as he was known in the stamp world, started to deal in stamps when he was a boy in Birmingham. At sixteen he became London's youngest stamp denler. He had his shop in "Book sellers' Row," that picturesque bit of old London which disappeared with the widening of the Strand.
He
ransacked, the
world's stamp markets for the valuable little pieces of gummied and perforated paper.....
King George was one of his customers. The King is an enthusiastic stamp coller ser, and usually spends half an hour cach evening among his collection.
It was from Mr. Field that the King secured his famous "error" stamps, so called because the word "pence was misprinted penoe." The price was £430, but the stamps would fetch at least three times as much to-day.

"Nowadays the soft collar is all the rage," Mr. Bremner said to a newspaper reporter," and I handle millions in the course of a year's business.. Just occa sionally we get orders for the old-fashion- ed Gladstone, or the Beaufort, but. people are more akin in matters of taste in dress to-day.
"When I first came here the young bloods of the City and West End wore a high military collar. A 3in. collar was quite normal neckwear. I had one, cus- tomer in the Edgware-road who wore a 33in collar and ordered them at regular | intervals by the bal-dozen."
Mr. Bremner recalls the old one-ply Gladstone and the romantic-looking Byronic collar, which on their first op pearance evoked much ribaldry from the City apprentices
"Actors were our most difficult cas tomers. They always wanted something spectacular something different. We have turned out queer-looking things for them at times.
"Another collar which enjoyed a fair popularity was the One-string Albert,' aamed after the Prince Consort, who habitually wore one. They were all made one size. The ends overlapped, and would fit any size neck.

The present hard collar shape is a natural growth out of the Le May tandem collar. This was an upright collar, with circular cut-away in front. After its first appearsace other manufacturers copied A it, and the inventor, Le May, a wealthy hop merchant, took legal action.
But it was then established, and bas been held ever since, that there can be. no patent for a shape alone.".
